Reasonable Accommodations

It is the policy of the NYC Department of Education (DOE) to provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified individuals with disabilities. Any current or prospective employee (applicant) who is a qualified individual with a disability may request a reasonable accommodation to assist in performing the essential functions of their present assignment or assist in the application process. Information regarding an individual's disability will be kept confidential to the extent required by law.

Types of Accommodations include:

  1. Medical Disability (may require medical documentation)
    • Physical Mobility
    • Hearing/Impairment
    • Visual Impairment
    • Mental Health Issue
    • Hardship Transfers (UFT Pedagogues only)
  2. Pregnancy and Related Conditions, Including Lactation (see Lactation Accommodation Policy
  3. Status as Victim of Domestic Violence, Stalking or Sex Offenses (requires documentation)
  4. Religious/Creed

The DOE will provide reasonable accommodations to all qualified employees and applicants unless providing such accommodations would create undue hardship for the agency.
