The District-Charter Special Education Partnership

Overview

The District-Charter Special Education Partnership, a cross-functional initiative led by the Office of School Design and Charter Partnerships’ Operations & Policy team and the Special Education Office, is providing strategic support to increase the capacity and efficacy of Committees on Special Education (CSE) and charter schools, with the goal of ensuring appropriate and timely supports to special education students. The partnership provides CSEs and charter schools with professional development around compliance areas based on an analysis of system-wide charter data, and targeted troubleshooting to individual charter and CSE partners.

Structure

In order to support charter schools in delivering services to students with disabilities, the DOE established a working group to discuss best practices and brainstorm system improvements, and hired additional personnel. New hires under District-Charter Partnerships include:

  • The Director of Committees on Special Education (CSE) Charter Compliance, who develops and streamlines systems and processes to monitor charter data and identify future and trending needs for support.
  • The Charter Supervisor of Psychologists, who provides targeted support to the CSEs and charter schools around serving students with disabilities.
  • Special Education teacher hires, who assist charter schools in developing services to support students with disabilities.
