Bilingual Special Education Teacher Incentive for School Year 2024–25

An agreement has been reached between the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) and the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), effective July 1, indicating tenured teachers working in a monolingual license in special education who also hold a valid New York State bilingual extension may change to a bilingual license during the 2024–25 school year. This agreement will expire on June 30, 2025.

Teachers who choose to switch their license area as described in the NYCDOE-UFT agreement will receive an additional financial incentive in the 2024–25 school year and each subsequent school year they remain in the bilingual license. Any future financial incentive is subject to funding availability. Under the NYCDOE-UFT agreement, there is no impact on the tenure held by a teacher or any future eligibility regarding tenure.

For questions about bilingual special education and mixed group classes, contact your district administrator of special education. For questions regarding teacher licenses, certification, and eligibility, contact your district director of HR.

Become a Teacher Leader

Join the over 1200 teacher leaders currently working in New York City's public schools. All eligible DOE teachers are invited to participate in the central screening process. Each teacher leadership role has unique qualifications and selection criteria.

Per Session

Teachers have the opportunity to apply for paid activities or roles through "per session" postings. These work opportunities take place before school, after school, on the weekend, on DOE holidays, or during the summer. The name "per session" comes from the rate (listed in the UFT contract) teachers are paid for this work. Each per session opportunity has its own application, selection process and time commitment.

Transfer to a Different School

The Open Market Hiring System (OMT) is open annually from April through August. Current teachers and other employees in eligible UFT-titles, who are either in active service or on an approved leave, are eligible to use it to seek transfers to different schools. Applications for new schools must be submitted using the process indicated on the new schools site, which also offers information on the new schools, positions, application process and selection criteria.

After the closing date in August, a release from your current principal is required for transfer, unless you have been placed in excess. For questions, contact HR Connect at (718) 935-4000.
