This page lists the competitive lists grant opportunities that New York City schools can apply for. Central offices manage the Federal Magnate and My Brother's Keeper grants and individual schools cannot apply to these district applications. Schools can apply directly to the grants listed in the Grant Opportunities section below.
Federal Magnet
Magnet programs aim to eliminate, reduce, or prevent minority group isolation in elementary and secondary schools while strengthening students' knowledge of academic subjects and their grasp of marketable vocational skills. The special curriculum of a magnet school attracts substantial numbers of students from different social, economic, ethnic, and racial backgrounds and provides greater opportunities for voluntary and court-ordered desegregation efforts to succeed.
Some programs emphasize academic subjects such as math, science, technology, language immersion, visual and performing arts, or humanities. Others use specific instructional approaches, such as Montessori methods, or approaches found in international baccalaureate programs or early college programs.
My Brother’s Keeper Initiative
The My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Initiative was established by President Obama to help address opportunity gaps that boys and young men of color face. New York State was the first state to adopt a budget to include support for this initiative. These monies will be used to support programs across the state that connect young people to mentoring, support networks, and the skills needed to find a good job or go to college. There are four grant opportunities under this initiative:
- MBK Challenge Grant
- Family and Community Engagement Program Grant
- Teacher Opportunity Corps Grant
- MBK Exemplary School Models and Practices Grant
